Resource classes continue as follows: Quarters 1 and 3: ELA Monday-Thursday and Math on Friday. Quarters 2 and 4: Math Monday through Thursday and ELA on Fridays. In addition, I am co-teaching with 4th and 5th grade. So the AIG students also see me in the mornings. This is proving to be a successful win-win situation for our gifted students.
In resource classes, 4th grade math students completed a unit on angles and measurement. They have certainly become expert angle measurers! :) The children made their own sundials and last week, we tested them. Lots of fun! ELA students are continuing a fascinating unit on Archaeology. This unit usually proves to be the students' favorite! We are reading and discussing a novel called I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii. After we learn how to be an archaeologist, we will excavate Pompeii. There is a lot of reading of expository text in this unit. Ask your child to see some of what we are reading!
My 5th grade ELA students finished their short story unit. We have learned the elements of a short story and how to identify the theme. They were introduced to famous authors such as Mark Twain, O. Henry, Langston Hughes and Miguel Cervantes. All students wrote a short story. They also wrote their second persuasive essay. On December 16th, we had a wonderful debate on global warming. I was so proud of our participants! We are continuing a unit on poetry. The students have learned how to analyze poetry and they are writing some beautiful poetry, which is hanging in the 5th-grade hallway. Come read it! In co-teaching, we are reading myths and the students completed an imaginative narrative. The students have become proficient at identifying theme and text structure. I am really proud of them! Math students have been practicing perseverance in problem-solving by studying math in real-world situations. We learned how to graph on the 4-quadrant plane and are enjoying an extension activity with fractions. New this year, 3rd grade students are identified as AIG in the Spring semester. All paperwork is now complete and math and ELA resource classes with identified 3rd graders began this week on March 21. Our Science Expo, which I am in charge of, will be April 29th. Information has been sent home and participants are busy at work! Our 5th grade Geography Quiz Bowl will be on June 3. Several notices have been sent home about this. I hope your 5th-grader is taking the challenge to study for this competition. Welcome to Kristen Viers, a student from Meredith. She is studying to be a teacher and is learning about gifted students by interning with me. We love having her and I love teaching her about how fun it is to work with gifted students! SSA information is now available. The nomination window opens on April 20 and closes at 5 PM on May 4. Please check the Briarcliff homepage for additional information or visit WakeAcceleration.Weebly.com. Please ask your child about what they are doing in AIG classes! And remember my challenge: Please make one night per week TECHNOLOGY-FREE night!
Thanks for your support. I love teaching your child!
